Chancellor’s Global Issues Forum
Difficult Dialogues in the Immigration Debate
Panelists: Abdullahi Ibrahim, MU Associate Professor of History; Kris W. Kobach, Daniel L. Brenner/ UMKC Scholar and Professor of Law; Rigel C. Oliveri, MU Associate Professor of Law
Chancellor Brady J. Deaton will moderate an interactive forum on immigration
issues. Immigration is often a media hot button and a major focus in political debates. In
addition to immigration across the U.S.-Mexican border, controversial issues have been raised
about homeland security and the threat of terrorism. Higher education institutions face threats to academic freedom when foreign scholars encounter problems obtaining visas to enter the U.S.

"Vernacular and Dominant Literacies in the Latino Community"
A presentation by Denice Atkins, MU School of Information Science & Learning Technologies (SISLT), Cambio Center fellow.
Literacy is not only a functional skill but a social practice, and that practice is used to communicate within and between cultures. This ethnographic observation of literacy practices finds three primary literacy motivations in the Latino Community: 1) Economic Support, 2) Defining Identity, and 3) Defining Community

"Healing Communities Torn by Racism and Violence"
A lecture by 1992 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Rigoberta Menchú (Tum) of Guatemala
Rigoberta Menchú won the Nobel Prize for her work in Guatemala to combat racism and violence from the 1980’s to the present day. As a Spanish speaker who has lived in exile in Mexico over the years, she offers a unique cross-cultural perspective. She is the only indigenous person to ever run for President of Guatemala, one of only 10 female Nobelists, and the only indigenous Nobel Peace Laureate is worthy of recognition.

"Language Brokering in Mexican Immigrant Families Living in the Midwest"
A presentation by Alejandro Morales, doctoral candidate in Counseling Psychology at the University of Nebraska
Language brokers are usually bilingual children that serve as interpreters and translators, mostly but not exclusively for their immediate relatives that do not speak the language and that have to interact with various settings, like health care, education, law, and the like. Even though a common practice, language brokering may have important consequences that require careful research.

A presentation by Dr. Emma Zapata Martelo, Professor of Sociology, Colegio de Postgraduados, Texcoco, Mexico.
A member of the Mexican Academy of Sciences, Dr. Zapata has conducted research and written several books on empowerment, micro-financing and group lending, and the livelihoods of rural women in communities affected by out migration. She is currently collaborating with Cambio Center Fellows on the livelihoods of women in sending communities.
