John William Proctor Distinguished Author

An Evening with Richard Rodríguez

One of America’s most important essayists and master of the “personal essay,” Richard Rodríguez is the author of Hunger of Memory: The Education of Richard Rodriguez, Days of Obligation: An Argument with my Mexican Father, and Brown: The Last Discovery of America. He has also been a contributing editor for Harper’s Magazine and the Sunday “Opinion” secton of the Los Angeles Times. He has for more than 10 years appeared as an essayist on “The News Hour with Jim Lehrer.” His honors include the George Peabody Award and the Frankel Medal (now renamed The National Humanities Medal), the highest honor the federal government gives to recognize work done in the humanities. He is visiting MU as the John William Proctor Distinguished Author.

Annual "Dr. Carlos Pérez-Mesa Memorial Concert & Fundraiser"

Hilario Durán, Piano; Roberto Occhipinti, Bass; Mark Kelso, Drums.

The concert is in honor of long-time Columbia resident and Jazz Series supporter, Cuban native Dr. Carlos Pérez-Mesa (1925-2000). Dr Pérez-Mesa was a professor and researcher at the MU School of Medicine, and chief of staff at Ellis Fischel Cancer Center; and a humanitarian and lover of arts and music – especially music from his homeland. Each year the Jazz Series honors the memory of Carlos by presenting an internationally recognized Cuban band in concert.

Dr. Melba Vasquez, Ph.D. ABPP, is an Author, Psychologist and Executive Director, Vasquez and Associates Mental Health Services, Austin, Texas.

These presentations will focus on the ethical imperatives that underlie the importance of multicultural competence in psychotherapy with members of racial/ethnic minority groups, including immigrant and international groups as well as our ethical responsibility to ensure our competence as helpers, which can be compromised if we neglect self-care.

Hispanic Business, Trade and Culture Commission

Regular Public Meeting of the statewide Commission hosted by MU's Cambio Center.

The Hispanic Business, Trade and Culture Commission serves as a statewide advisory body to the State of Missouri's Department of Economic Development. Responsibilities of the Commission include, but are not limited to, gathering and disseminating information concerning matters relevant to the economic needs of Hispanic businesses; monitoring legislative issues pertaining to the Hispanic business community; submitting recommendations concerning business development issues relevant to Hispanic Missourians and, when appropriate, recommending legislative initiatives.  The Commission shall also help to identify and facilitate foreign and domestic investment opportunities for companies of Hispanic origin.
