"New Faces on Main Street" (1998)

Recent waves of Southeast Asian and Latino immigrants are changing the complexion of many small towns in the Midwest. "New Faces on Main Street" investigates the status of these newcomers--their struggle to hold onto their traditions while contributing to their adopted communities. Using Northeastern Wisconsin as a microcosm for middle America, this documentary also addresses the negative perceptions of established residents who may not be entirely comfortable with a heterogeneous American heartland.

Cambio Center Brown Bag Movie SeriesCambio Center Logo

"Farmingville" (2003)

The Cambio Center starts a new Brown Bag movie series with this docurama.

In the late 1990's, some 1,500 Mexican workers moved to the middle-class town of Farmingville. In some ways a familiar American story—an influx of illegal immigrants to do work the locals won't; rising tensions with the Anglo populations; charges and counter-charges of lawlessness and racism; protest marches, unity rallies and internet campaigns. Then came the vicious hate crimes that tore the community apart. But this story does not take place in California or Texas, this takes place in Farmingville, New York on Long Island. Produced and directed by Catherine Tambini and Carlos Sandoval.Free and open to the public.

Color, 78 minutes, English and Spanish with English subtitles.

Domingo Martínez, Director of the Cambio Center, will introduce the movie.

“Diversity in Action” seminar

"Universal Values? Not According to the Facts!"

Peter M. Gardner, Professor Emeritus, MU Department of Anthropology

More than a century of scientific research reveals that key values having to do with gender, religion, and sexual morality vary greatly from culture to culture. Claims that humans have “universal values” are simply uninformed. And, to promote such values would be to attack humanity’s stock of accumulated wisdom.
