Gustavo Arellano, Creator of Syndicated Column, "Ask A Mexican!"

Ask a Mexican! is a nationally syndicated weekly column written by Gustavo Arellano published by Orange County's alternative weekly OC Weekly. It was first published in 2004 as a one-time spoof, but it ended up becoming one of the weekly's most popular columns. Gustavo has turned the column into a book, and he’ll be joining MU SPJ for a discussion of media stereotypes and how he tries to combat cultural ignorance with humor and insight.

"Jornal Companheiros de Luta: Um Lamento Jovem do Daruê Malungo - Empowerment through Journalism: Social Change through Youth Media Production in Northeast Brazil"

A presentation by Carolina Escalera, MU Journalism student.

Carolina Escalera taught and facilitated a journalism class as a research project in one of the most low-income areas of Recife, PE, Brazil, with 40 at-risk adolescents in November 2007. The study explores how journalism can be used as a powerful force in democratic societies for change.

International Women’s Day Gala
Featured Speaker: Barbara Martínez-Jitner

An event that honors the international women at MU.

Come celebrate International Women’s Day with one of the First Latina executive producers of a prime-time network television series, Barbara Martínez-Jitner. Golden Globe and Emmy nominated Martínez-Jitner is executive producer/writer/director for the miniseries American Family.

Martínez-Jitner will discuss her critically acclaimed documentary La Frontera. This film inspired the movie, Bordertown, starring Jennifer Lopez. In her documentary, Martínez-Jitner posed as a factory worker on the US/Mexico border in order to uncover a dark world of grueling poverty and sexual abuse that leads to murder.

Chancellor’s Global Issues Forum

Difficult Dialogues in the Immigration Debate

Panelists: Abdullahi Ibrahim, MU Associate Professor of History; Kris W. Kobach, Daniel L. Brenner/ UMKC Scholar and Professor of Law; Rigel C. Oliveri, MU Associate Professor of Law

Chancellor Brady J. Deaton will moderate an interactive forum on immigration issues. Immigration is often a media hot button and a major focus in political debates. In
addition to immigration across the U.S.-Mexican border, controversial issues have been raised about homeland security and the threat of terrorism. Higher education institutions face threats to academic freedom when foreign scholars encounter problems obtaining visas to enter the U.S.

"Healing Communities Torn by Racism and Violence"
HLAFSA logoA lecture by 1992 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient Rigoberta Menchú (Tum) of Guatemala

Rigoberta Menchú won the Nobel Prize for her work in Guatemala to combat racism and violence from the 1980’s to the present day.  As a Spanish speaker who has lived in exile in Mexico over the years, she offers a unique cross-cultural perspective. She is the only indigenous person to ever run for President of Guatemala, one of only 10 female Nobelists, and the only indigenous Nobel Peace Laureate is worthy of recognition.
